DETROIT, MI (August 7, 2017)-  The AAU Junior Olympic Games are the world's largest multi-sport event with over 15,000 athletes competing in 18 different sports. An event of this magnitude requires extra help from hundreds of volunteers every year.

Among these volunteers were a group of students from Oral Roberts University, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“They were amazing and extremely helpful,” said AAU Junior Olympic Games sport manager Amanda Steelman on the Oral Roberts students. She continued saying, “They made the process of setting up the world’s largest multi-sport event in the world so much easier. I really hope this experience will benefit their career in sports and this partnership between ORU and AAU continues for many years. We can’t wait to have them back again next year in Des Moines, Iowa!”

“Partnering with Oral Roberts’s sport management department has been great for the Games,” said Paul Campbell, AAU Junior Olympic Games Chair. “We appreciate the countless hours the students volunteer in making the event a success and provide them valuable event management experience at the same time.”

The students were led by Oral Roberts University Assistant Professor of Health, Leisure and Sport Science Dr. Terry Shannon. He said about the experience, "The AAU Junior Olympic Games staff has afforded our sport management students an invaluable opportunity to learn through a hands-on experience. The AAU Junior Olympics Games is one of the most prestigious annual sporting events in the United States. We will be eternally grateful and appreciative of the experiences we received from AAU."

The AAU greatly appreciates the Oral Roberts student-volunteers as well as all the other volunteers that assisted us at the 2017 AAU Junior Olympic Games.
